Art exhibitions in Chiang Mai this April

Chiang Mai’s art scene is hosting a diverse range of exhibitions this April, anchored by a major retrospective of Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook at the MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum. The survey, curated by Kittima Chareeprasit and Roger Nelson, spans four decades of the artist's provocative video and installation works. Other highlights include Myrtille Tibayrenc’s installation of 108 Buddha paintings at the Museum of Something (MOS), Chatchai Notananda’s process-oriented solo show at Haan Studio, and Houda Bakkali’s digital compositions at Alliance Française.

This May, Chiang Mai's art scene offers a diverse lineup of exhibitions across galleries, museums, and independent spaces. Highlights include a group show on regional identity at Chiang Mai Art Museum, a calligraphy-focused solo exhibition by Jin Li at Makok Art Space, and 'Class 2 Canvas' at Fãr Studios featuring artist-educators. Mid-month brings two openings: Chitti Kasemkitvatana's 'Epilogue: A Diffraction Grating' at Gallery Seescape, exploring time and light, and Kailash Mani's solo show of outsider art at Head High Second Floor.

Chiang Mai, Bangkok transform into open-air galleries once again

The Galleries' Nights 2025 returns to Chiang Mai and Bangkok, transforming both cities into open-air galleries. The event, presented by the Embassy of France, will showcase over 200 artists across more than 80 galleries—Chiang Mai on November 1-2 and Bangkok on November 21-22. This 12th edition marks the 340th anniversary of Franco-Thai diplomatic relations and is adapted in tribute to HM Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother for her contributions to traditional arts and craftsmanship. The program highlights gender equality in the arts with support from the French organization Aware, and features free transport options including traditional red trucks in Chiang Mai and electric tuk-tuks in Bangkok. The closing ceremony will be held at Jim Thompson Art Center on November 23, with a performance by choreographer Jitti Chompee.

Chiang Mai Design Week 2025 (CMDW2025) will take place from December 6 to 14, 2025, under the theme “Local Plus: Creativity, Technology and Sustainability.” Organized by the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) with a network of Northern Thai creatives and entrepreneurs, the festival features over 150 programs across multiple districts in Chiang Mai, including Klang Wiang, Chang Moi - Tha Phae, and Sanpakoi. Highlights include exhibitions like “Make Scents, Make Sense” by CEA and the Thai Perfumers, “The Homecoming Club” by ThairathPlus, and the “CMDW × Mango Art Festival” showcasing international artists. The festival uses mathematical symbols—Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract—to convey themes of collaboration, amplification, knowledge sharing, and sustainability, aiming to create an equation of endless possibilities.
