Visual historian and author Lucy Sante has opened two simultaneous exhibitions of her collage artwork in New York. The shows, at Karma gallery and the Center for Book Arts, feature work created from a vast personal archive of materials she has collected over decades, which she meticulously cuts and reassembles.
Aldwyth, a reclusive artist known for her intricate collages and Joseph Cornell-inspired assemblages, has died at age 90. Living an ascetic lifestyle, she created epic, densely layered works that reordered art history and her own place within—and outside—it, often using found objects and meticulous cut-paper compositions.
The Coburn Art Gallery at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, will host a regional exhibition featuring 70 works by members of the Ohio Collage Society from May 29 through July 24. The Beverly Arts Center in Chicago is hosting "RE-BOP! (Obstructions & Disruptions)," a group exhibition dedicated to the art of collage. Curated by Paloma Trecka and Todd Bartel, the show features nearly 60 artists from Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and across the U.S., including prominent local artist Tony Fitzpatrick, who originally conceived the exhibition. The works range from traditional cut-paper pieces to digital collages, with many exploring themes of improvisation, rhythm, and disruption. The exhibition was organized with help from the Beverly Arts Alliance and the participatory magazine Cut Me Up, which issued an open call that drew 150 submissions.
Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, California, is hosting an opening reception for its Student Art Exhibition on February 26 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the school's art gallery. The exhibition features diorama artworks, photo collage pieces, and photography created by studio art and photography students, highlighting an interdisciplinary project that explores storytelling, composition, lighting, and perspective. Karin Skiba's 50-year retrospective, titled "Tapestries, Paper, and Paint," opens May 17 at the Hi-Desert Artists Gallery in Yucca Valley during the Yucca Valley Artwalk. The exhibition runs through June 16 and features large-scale collages of Detroit's decaying architecture, fictional portraits of women, and works layered with beads and symbolic feathers. Skiba, who spent over 20 years teaching in the community college system and helped establish the gallery at Norco College, describes art-making as integral to her identity.
