The Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC) has announced the lineup for the SHIZUOKA World Theatre Festival 2026, scheduled to take place from April 25 to May 6, 2026. Under the artistic direction of Natsuki Ishigami, the festival will transform Shizuoka City into a sprawling stage, featuring international collaborations such as the Japanese premiere of 'The Tiger of Malaya' by Singapore’s Teater Ekamatra and the site-specific 'Eel Migration' involving local residents with Brazilian roots. The program also includes Satoshi Miyagi’s acclaimed production of 'Medea' and contemporary works addressing gender, labor, and social justice.
NEYRA PÉREZ: RETORNO A ROEBIRI
Neyra Pérez, an Iskonawa artist, presents her exhibition "El retorno del Roebiri" at the Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru, running until May 9, 2026. The show features her distinctive kené designs, which she creates using natural materials like yakuchapana resin and virgin clay on raw canvas, fixed through sunlight and river washing. The works reference Roebiri, a mountain in the Amazonian Sierra del Divisor that was the ancestral territory of the Iskonawa people, from whom they were displaced in the late 1950s by missionaries and the military. Since 2018, Pérez has been part of a cultural revitalization effort led by anthropologist Carolina Rodríguez to recover these traditional designs and practices.
Toledo Tattoo Company and Bold Lines Gallery are set to host a grand opening for their new combined venue in downtown Toledo on March 14. The Obama Foundation has commissioned artist Theaster Gates to create an expansive frieze for the Pendleton Atrium of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC), set to open on Chicago’s South Side in 2026. The installation will draw from the Johnson Publishing Company image archive and the Howard Simmons photographic collections, celebrating the visual archives of Ebony and Jet magazines. Gates, who founded the Rebuild Foundation in 2009, will join nine other artists—including Kiki Smith, Nick Cave, Marie Watt, Jenny Holzer, and Idris Khan—whose works were announced in September for the OPC campus.
