Harvard University's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts has officially appointed Kate McNamara as its John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director. McNamara, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis since last year, is the founder of the experimental art space ODD-KIN and has held leadership positions at Providence College Galleries, Otis College of Art and Design, and Boston University Art Galleries.
Curator Summer Guthery, who left economics to found four non-profit experimental art spaces across the US, is launching a fifth venture called Times with fellow curator Francesca Sonara. Located in Manhattan’s Chinatown at 151 Lafayette Street, the 3,000-square-foot space will host up to three exhibitions simultaneously across two galleries and a screening room. The inaugural event on 12 February features Latvian performance artist Jana Jacuka, followed by a solo exhibition by Danish artist Nina Beier (21 February-9 May). Times rejects a permanent institutional model, planning a three-year obsolescence to remain nimble and responsive to artists’ needs.
The Box LA, a pioneering experimental art space in Los Angeles known for its fearless support of unconventional and performance art, is closing after 19 years. Founded in 2007 by Mara McCarthy in Chinatown (later moving to the Arts District), the gallery operated as a commercial space but with a nonprofit ethos, championing underrecognized artists from her father Paul McCarthy's generation alongside emerging talents. Its final exhibition, a retrospective of Wally Hedrick presented with Parker Gallery, ended April 4, with a closing celebration planned for June 6 featuring a fashion show by Johanna Went. The closure is attributed to financial struggles, exacerbated by the Eaton Fire that destroyed McCarthy's home and her family's, and a shift in support from McCarthy Studios.
Brooklyn’s newest experimental art space, The Gallery (stylized as “The Gallry”), has opened on the fourth floor of a former automobile service station in Prospect Heights, now converted into creative offices. Curated by artist Florian Meisenberg, the exhibition features site-specific works by over 40 artists installed throughout a former guitar-string manufacturer’s office, including cubicle walls, utility closets, and HVAC systems. The space also functions as a co-working hub, with free daily spots for subscribers. The show runs through May 24 and includes events like screenings, poetry readings, and satirical corporate-themed programming.
Maya Man, an artist who earned her MFA from UC's Media Art program in 2023, is the subject of a conversation with critic Ben Davis. Her work *A Realistic Day in My Life Living in New York City* is the first commission for the Whitney Museum's 'On the Hour' program, appearing on the museum's website for 30 seconds each hour. Man also founded the experimental art space HEART in New York City, which operated briefly but left a significant impact on the online/offline art scene before closing earlier in 2025.
