lucy raven dam removal murderers bar

Artist Lucy Raven has completed her film trilogy, "The Drumfire," with the release of Murderers Bar (2025). The 42-minute film documents the historic removal of four dams along the Klamath River, capturing the dramatic release of water and the restoration of a river system flowing from Oregon through Northern California. The work is currently on view at the Power Plant in Toronto and is scheduled to travel to the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston in May.

Bill Horrigan, a pioneering curator who transformed Ohio's Wexner Center for the Arts into a leading destination for film and video art, died on May 15 after a long battle with amyloidosis. Over 34 years at the Columbus museum, he built a celebrated film and video program that attracted world-renowned artists like Chris Marker and Julia Scher, and organized landmark exhibitions for Mark Dion, Gretchen Bender, and Shirin Neshat. He also served as a curatorial adviser for the 2008 Whitney Biennial, helped program the Video Data Bank, and led the 1989 edition of Video Against AIDS.

Images of a Visionary World

Film Notes has published an essay by Mats Antonissen analyzing Henri Michaux's 1963 film "Images du monde visionnaire." The essay situates the film within Michaux's decade-long exploration of psychotropic substances, the history of pharmaceutical filmmaking, and postwar avant-garde cinema. This publication coincides with an exhibition at the Vandenhove Centre in Ghent dedicated to the film and related works, on view through May 2026.

The 29th Art Film Festival will take place on June 15, 2025, at the Aichi Arts Center's Art Space A in Nagoya, Japan. Organized by the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, the festival features a special screening program centered on the film collective Kūzoku. Highlights include the premiere of Katsuya Tomita's 'Senkō Issenri ILHA FORMOSA' (2025), the 33rd original video work commissioned by the Aichi Arts Center, alongside earlier works by Tomita and Toranosuke Aizawa, such as 'The Daughter of Chiang Rai' (2012) and 'Flower Tale Babylon' (1997). The event also includes a talk session with Tomita and Aizawa after the screenings.

“Ekrani i Artit” at Shkodër

The 9th edition of Ekrani i Artit, an event dedicated to experimental cinema, video art, and contemporary visual culture, will take place in Shkodër from 27 to 31 May 2026. The five-day program brings together artists, filmmakers, curators, and audiences from Albania and abroad, organized for the second year through a collaborative effort.

Anna Thew's exhibition

New Art Projects gallery in London is presenting a solo exhibition of Anna Thew, an artist whose practice spans painting, performance, filmmaking, and music. The show brings together historic and recent works on paper and film, including pieces never before shown or screened, and will feature a new multi-screen projection created for the duration of the exhibition. Thew first made a film in 1980 and gained a reputation for challenging the Structuralist Materialist school of British experimental cinema through works that emphasize emotive content, poetic editing, and spoken word soundtracks.
