Shirley Gorelick: Figuring It Out

The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is presenting "Shirley Gorelick: Figuring It Out," an exhibition running from March 27 to June 28, 2026, that centers on three large-scale paintings by the American realist artist Shirley Gorelick (1924–2000). The show brings together these works from NMWA’s collection for the first time, including the first canvas in her "Three Graces" series, a triple portrait of activist Libby Ourlicht, and a depiction of longtime friends Gunny and Lee Benson. More than 30 additional paintings, drawings, and prints further illuminate Gorelick’s practice and her subjects. Gorelick, who was active in New York artist-run women’s cooperative galleries in the 1970s, developed a bold realist style that combined vigorous brushwork, heightened shadows, and vivid patterns, yet she was largely omitted from art historical narratives that focused on Pop art, Minimalism, and conceptual art.

Intuit Art Museum Showcases Self-Taught Artists, Work About Migration in ‘Catalyst: Im/migration’

The Intuit Art Museum in Chicago has extended its exhibition “Catalyst: Im/migration and Self-Taught Art in Chicago” through March 22, 2026. Featuring nearly two dozen artists, the show highlights the creative contributions of migrants and immigrants alongside the rise of self-taught art in 20th-century Chicago. Among the works is Pooja Pittie’s interactive piece “What We Build to Belong,” a hand-knotted net-like structure where visitors can add notes, drawings, or string. The museum is hosting a free community day on Feb. 7, 2026. The exhibition includes artists from diverse backgrounds, such as the late Tae Kwon “Thomas” Kong, who made collages from packing materials at his convenience store, and Charles Warner, a carpenter who created wood-carved cathedral models. Three artists came to Chicago from the South as part of the Great Migration.

See what's new for the Shelburne Museum's free community day

Shelburne Museum will host a free community day on May 9, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., celebrating its 2026 season. The event features three new exhibitions: "Varied and Alive - New and Rarely Seen Treasures from the Collection" (19th to mid-20th century folk art, circus posters, textiles, and more), "On Point - Needlework from the Garthwaite Family Collection" (Vermont schoolgirl needlework and women's education), and "Big River - Ogden Pleissner in Wyoming" (sketches and paintings of the American West). Activities include curator-led tours, artmaking sessions, live music by Marie Hamilton, Owen Leavey, and Deja Nous, a seed swap, and garden talks. Fall and Winter 2025 Programming at the National Museum of Women in the Arts
