For the People: Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail Engages Thousands of Art-Goers Each Month

Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail (FFAT), now in its 22nd year, has grown from a small gathering of a few dozen attendees to regularly drawing thousands to the downtown arts district each month. In October 2025, the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA) distributed 6,000 wristbands before running out. The event features exhibitions, open studios, craft vendors, music, hands-on activities, drinks, and food trucks, with streets closed to traffic and visitors moving on foot or by trolley. The trail began organically in August 2004, spearheaded by artist Steve Teeters of St. Eligius Studio, and was inspired by a First Friday event in Corpus Christi.

Photo of the Week: Amherst Arts Night Plus Returns

Amherst Arts Night Plus returned on April 23 after a six-year hiatus, with 20 venues across downtown opening their doors and over 20 local artists exhibiting their work. Several pieces were sold during the evening, and most venues offered free refreshments and the chance to speak directly with artists. Katie Streater of the Amherst Business Improvement District estimated attendance at about 125 people, and the Amherst Center Cultural District is now exploring a recurring version of the event, possibly quarterly or monthly.

Winter Welcome brings creativity and community spirit to Grays

On December 18, Grays Shopping Centre hosted Winter Welcome, a community celebration produced by Thurrock-based arts organization Together Productions in collaboration with Welcome to the UK. The event featured visual arts activities, a 'Creating Home' art exhibition by the Together Create Visual Arts Collective with artists Marsha Ashley and Salina Jane, participatory singing led by Ashley Beauchamp and Thames Opera Company, and food prepared by Welcome to the UK community members. Thurrock's Deputy Mayor Cllr Steve Liddiard attended, and shoppers enjoyed a pop-up performance.

Micro Gallery Exhibition on display Dec. 18-Jan 8

The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center in Auburn, Alabama, is hosting a Micro Gallery Exhibition from December 18 to January 8, featuring miniature artworks sized at 3x3 or 5x5 inches.
