design inspiration summer interiors collecting

Cultured magazine's article "design inspiration summer interiors collecting" presents five distinct stories exploring the intersection of art, design, and collecting within private homes and studios. It profiles designer John Gachot's Shelter Island studio where his paintings coexist with his father Richard Gachot's sculptures; the Montauk home-workshop of Roman & Williams founders Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer; artist David Salle's Hamptons residence and his approach to selecting artworks; real estate investor Carl Gambino's art collection featuring emerging and established artists; and author James Frey's personal collection, which he began by purchasing a Picasso with cash.

CULTURED magazine celebrated the release of its second Hamptons issue of the summer with a garden party at the Montauk home of Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, founders of architecture and design studio Roman & Williams, who served as guest editors for the July/August issue. The event drew a star-studded crowd of East End regulars including Julianne Moore, Martha Stewart, Cynthia Rowley, Jenna Lyons, photographer Cass Bird, David and Monica Zwirner, Sotheby's CEO Charles Stewart, and many others, with drinks by Casa Dragones and a potluck spread by chef Chris Kronner.

Design duo Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer, co-founders of the architecture and design studio Roman and Williams, reflect on how their Montauk home, Sea Ranch, has become the creative heart of their practice. Purchased in 2006 as a rustic mid-Atlantic Colonial cottage, the property has evolved from a weekend retreat into a laboratory for furniture prototypes, ceramic experiments, and design ideas that later appear in high-profile projects worldwide—from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s British Galleries to London’s Maison Estelle. The couple, who met on a film set in 1994, also run the SoHo shop Roman and Williams Guild and a furnishings collection, balancing the intensity of New York with the shaping and forming they do by the ocean.

Stephen Alesch, co-founder of the design firm Roman and Williams, shares hand-drawn plans and sketches of his Hamptons orchard, called “the fruit loop,” in CULTURED magazine’s latest Hamptons issue. The orchard, located at the Montauk home he shares with his wife and business partner Robin Standefer, features rings of fruit trees inspired by classical labyrinth gardens and historic botanical drawings, including a 21st-century interpretation of an apple diagram.
