A fire broke out late Wednesday in a 19th-century warehouse at 481 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, destroying dozens of artist studios and damaging the building's roof and fourth floor. Over 250 FDNY members battled the blaze for more than seven hours, with two firefighters sustaining minor injuries. The warehouse housed a large artist cooperative, woodshops, furniture makers, and small businesses, and many artists lost work prepared for the upcoming Red Hook Open Studios event.

Open Studios event in Fish Hoek and Clovelly: A celebration of local art

The inaugural Open Studios Fish Hoek and Clovelly (OSFHC) launched on October 3, showcasing the artwork of 19 local artists across 15 studios in the South African coastal communities of Fish Hoek and Clovelly over the weekend. A large-scale art installation was placed in the front windows of the 97-year-old family-run department store AP Jones to promote the event. Participating artists include Susan Didcott, Marlise Keith, Sue Kaplan, Yda Walt, Mandy Johnston, and organizer Lauren Shantall, with works ranging from sculpture and paint pieces to textile art and live material burns.

Elizabeth Smith and Sue Lowday unite for Isle of Wight Open Studios exhibition

Isle of Wight artist Elizabeth Smith will open her studio at Nightingales in Bonchurch from 17th to 25th May 2025 as part of the Isle of Wight Open Studios event. Her watercolour paintings and prints, including works from her Charting Ventnor series, capture the architecture and landscapes of the South Wight. Fellow artist and designer Sue Lowday, a former silversmith who now works in leather, will also exhibit at the same venue from 17th to 21st May, showcasing her handcrafted belts, bags, and other items.

Local artist joins Devon Open Studios with new exhibition

Hundreds of artists across Devon will open their studios to the public from September 6-21 as part of the Devon Open Studios event, with over 400 artists participating across 170 venues. Among them is Exmouth artist Ray Balkwill, who will open his Studio Gallery for three days (September 6-8) with a new exhibition titled 'Connections,' featuring his recent assemblages and ceramics alongside his traditional watercolours, pastels, and oils inspired by the Exe Estuary.
