Creating positivity out of toxicity

Artists from Good Bank Gallery in McLaren Vale are collaborating with The Wild South on a series of events called TOXIC SURF (Mid Coast) as part of South Australia's Nature Festival. The program includes workshops, exhibitions, a lantern parade, film screenings, and a choir performance, all aimed at addressing the ecological crisis caused by the harmful algal bloom Karenia Mikimotoi along the state's coastline. Community members can participate in ocean lantern-making workshops, a roving lantern performance, a community art exhibition, and an art and eco-resilience workshop, with contributions from local artists, Ngarrindjeri elders, and environmental groups.

OMA, Surf Museum Host Dual Exhibition to Drive Local Tourism

The Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) and the California Surf Museum (CSM) are partnering for the first time to host a dual-venue exhibition titled “Surf Art: Exploring California’s Coastal Culture.” OMA’s exhibit opens August 23 and CSM’s on September 13, featuring works including Kevin Short’s 2004 oil painting “Crosstown Traffic.” The collaboration aims to merge OMA’s art expertise with CSM’s deep surf history, with OMA investing about $25,000 and CSM about $10,000. The project has been in development for a year and includes a themed popup in OMA’s gift store.

17th Annual VB Surf Art Expo kicks off summer season at Virginia Beach Oceanfront

The 17th Annual Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo will take place from May 23 to May 25, 2026, along the boardwalk at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The event features over 90 regional artists from Maine to Florida, showcasing surf-themed art in various mediums including painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and ceramics. The expo is partnered with the Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic surfing competition, which includes a WSL World Tour Longboard event and a professional shortboard competition with over 300 athletes from more than a dozen countries and a $16,000 prize purse.

Surf’s up at annual exhibition

The annual Surf Art exhibition at Port Noarlunga’s Arts Centre in South Australia has opened, celebrating the region’s surfing culture, lifestyle, history, and coastal environment. First held in 1993, the free exhibition runs until February 2 and features works in various media—painting, jewellery, mosaics, photography, glassware, textiles, and sculpture—by local and interstate artists. Coordinator Nerissa Galloway noted pieces referencing the recent algal bloom, including a painting by Jo Headon depicting a surfer in a hazmat suit. A separate exhibition, 'The Bloom,' will follow from February 6 to March 16, inviting community reflection on the algal bloom and coastal ecology.
