The gallery P420 in Bologna has opened "See Through," the second solo exhibition by Welsh artist Merlin James. The show features a non-linear curation that blends works from different decades, ranging from landscapes and interiors to erotic scenes and near-abstract compositions. James’s approach treats the exhibition as a "jam session," where visual and thematic repetitions provide a structure for diverse painterly explorations.
The Arts Council of Wales has announced a 19-strong team of early-career artists, curators, and students who will travel to Venice this summer to support Wales' presence at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, running from May 9 to November 22, 2026. As part of the Invigilator+ programme, participants will spend at least one month in Venice acting as ambassadors for the Wales in Venice exhibition, an official collateral event. The exhibition, titled Sownd, is led by artists Manon Awst and Dylan Huw, jointly organized by Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthen and Oriel Davies in Newtown, with Steffan Jones-Hughes as Curator and Catherine Spring as Exhibition Project Director. The invigilators include Lily Tonkin Wells, Robert Oros, Ophelia dos Santos, Grace Springer, Cerian Wilshire Davies, Megan Evans, Howl Hubbard, Temeka Davies, Llyr Evans, Chloe Goodwin, Abby Pouslon, and Niamh O'Dobhain, while student team members come from Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Wales Trinity St David, Wrexham University, and Aberystwyth University.
The Bob Guy Gallery has officially opened at Y Dolydd, Llanfyllin Workhouse, named in honor of the late Welsh wood engraver, artist, and musician. The gallery’s inauguration on St David’s Day featured the launch of 'Cydweithio – Collaborate,' an exhibition exploring the intersection of visual art and poetry, reflecting Guy’s own history of collaborative creative practice.
A landmark exhibition of Welsh artist Gwen John, titled "Gwen John: Strange Beauties," has opened at Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales) to celebrate the painter's 150th birthday. It is the most comprehensive retrospective of her work in 40 years, spanning two floors and featuring previously unseen sketches, watercolours, and intimate paintings of recurring subjects like cats, St Thérèse of Lisieux, and the artist's own room. The exhibition is curated by Lucy Wood and runs until June 28th.
