Titled "Visions of the West," the sale features 76 lots with a combined low estimate of $50 million, potentially doubling the current auction record for the genre. Highlighting the event is Frederic Remington’s 'Coming to the Call', which carries an estimate of $6 million to $8 million and could set a new individual record for the artist.
Christie’s announced a single-owner sale titled “Visions of the West” featuring artworks from the collection of billionaire Bill Koch, to be held over two sessions on January 20 and January 21. The sale includes dozens of works by artists who depicted the American West and frontier, such as Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, and Albert Bierstadt, with highlights including Remington’s painting *Coming to the Call* (estimated $6–$8 million) and Russell’s *The Sun Worshippers* ($4–$6 million). Koch, 85, is the lesser-known of the four Koch brothers and an avid art collector, who also recently sold part of his wine collection through Christie’s.
The Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, Oregon, has opened 'C.S. Price: A Portrait,' a retrospective exhibition of more than 40 works by Clayton Sumner Price, a Modernist painter who helped shape America’s view of the West. The show was organized by Roger Saydack, a retired attorney and self-taught scholar who first encountered Price’s painting 'The Fisherman' as a boy at the Detroit Institute of Arts and spent decades researching the artist. It runs through August 30 and is the first solo exhibition of Price’s work in over 25 years, accompanied by a 312-page catalog.
The 53rd annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale is on view through August 3, 2025, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The show features more than 270 original paintings and sculptures by over 90 leading Western artists, including works by Thomas Blackshear II, John Coleman, Dan Friday, Teresa Elliott, Dan Ostermiller, Joshua Tobey, and Paul Moore. Highlights include John Coleman's monumental bronze sculpture "Victory! Plenty Coups" and Sandy Scott's bronze "Yonder is Jackson Hole."
The Denver Art Museum has announced the upcoming exhibition "Southwest Impressions: Prints from the Barbara J. Thompson Collection," opening June 29, 2025, and running through June 14, 2026. The show features works on paper by artists who lived or traveled in the American Southwest between the late 1800s and mid-1900s, drawn from a collection of over 100 prints gifted to the museum's Petrie Institute of Western American Art in 2024 by Barbara J. Thompson in honor of her grandfather, printmaker C. A. Seward. The exhibition will be presented in two rotations of about fifty prints each, covering intaglio, block printing, lithography, and serigraphy, with interpretive videos and a digital publication.
Dr. Eric Singleton has been appointed as the new director of the Booth Western Art Museum, set to assume the role in mid-July. He was selected after a nationwide search led by Georgia Museums President and Board Chair Lorri McClain, who praised his extensive experience, creativity, and collaborative leadership style. Singleton currently serves as the McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture and Curator of Native American Art and Ethnology at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, bringing over 25 years of museum experience to the Booth. He has previously worked at the Gilcrease Institute of American History & Art and the Philbrook Museum of Art, and holds a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University.
