From online platform to neighbourhood gallery

Art Cube Gallery, a new contemporary art space, has opened in a residential neighborhood in Virugambakkam, Chennai, housed in a 50-year-old family home. The gallery launches with 'First Impressions,' an inaugural exhibition running until June 10, featuring works by 18 emerging and established artists. Founded during the pandemic by Dakshayani Balakrishnan and artist AV Ilango, the gallery began as an online platform to support underrepresented artists and has now expanded into a physical space to make art more accessible to local communities.

Art show reflects on human experience, aspiration

A group of nine young artists, all alumni of the Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai, have formed a collective called Continuum and will present their first exhibition, 'Between Becoming & Being,' starting May 15 at Lalit Kala Akademi. Initiated by artist couple Preethi Umapathy and Prithiviraj, the show features works in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics by Deepika, Ganesh, Jagath Ravi, Padmapriya, Prithiviraj, Preethi, Ramesh, Saran Mathi, and Sarath Kumar, exploring themes of identity, aspiration, human existence, and lived experiences.

Dalit History Month: Vaanam's Dalit art exhibit tells 'The Whole Story'

The Neelam Cultural Centre and Neelam Arts Collective have launched "The Whole Story," a significant Dalit art exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai. Featuring works by 36 artists from across India, the show is a cornerstone of the fifth Vaanam Art Festival held during Dalit History Month. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of visual practices—from Yuvadharani’s multidisciplinary pieces to S Venkatesan’s explorations of urban displacement—all centered on themes of caste, memory, and resistance.
