Radical Reclamation at the First-Ever ArtPhilly Festival
Hyperallergic reports on the inaugural ArtPhilly festival, a new city-wide biennial in Philadelphia featuring over 30 original commissions. The festival opened on May 27 and runs through July 2, 2026, offering an alternative to nationalist celebrations of the US semiquincentennial. Highlights include artist indira allegra's project 'Sail Through This to That,' which honors Ona Judge, who escaped enslavement by George Washington in 1796, and Dominique 'Rem'mie' Fells, a Black transgender woman murdered in 2020. The work involves a procession to the Delaware River, sails adorned with symbolic plants, and community rituals blending mourning, resilience, and reclamation.
