Art News: A Preview Of The Lucas Museum Of Narrative Art and A Roberta Flack Auction at Julien’s

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a 300,000-square-foot institution designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec, will open in Los Angeles' Exposition Park on September 22. The 11-acre campus includes a park by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA and will feature over 1,200 objects across 30 galleries, showcasing narrative art from ancient sculptures to modern cinema, drawn from the museum's founding collection. Separately, Julien's Auctions will host "Roberta Flack: Style, Art & Music," a no-reserve auction celebrating the singer's life and cultural impact, including her Bösendorfer Imperial Concert Grand Piano.

The Sprawling New David Geffen Galleries At LACMA Open To The Public On Sunday, May 3

The David Geffen Galleries at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will open to the public on Sunday, May 3, after 20 years of development. Designed by architect Peter Zumthor, the 900-foot-long horizontal glass and concrete structure overlooks the La Brea Tar Pits and stretches over Wilshire Boulevard. The main floor, elevated 30 feet above street level, offers 110,000 square feet of gallery space for LACMA’s permanent collection. The inaugural exhibition is inspired by four major bodies of water—the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans, and the Mediterranean Sea—and features works by artists including Todd Gray, Do Ho Suh, Lauren Halsey, Tavares Strachan, Jeff Koons, and Diego Rivera. The building also includes open plazas, an outdoor public space, and an Erewhon Cafe, with a larger restaurant and wine bar planned for fall 2026.

LA-Based ModA Curations Opens New Space in NYC With A Contemporary Art Exhibition Called “Love”

ModA (Modern Anthropology) Studios, a Los Angeles-based creative organization founded by George Fan, opened its first permanent location at 227 E 24th Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side on June 27, 2025, with a contemporary art exhibition titled “Love.” Curated by Sia Fang, the show features nine artists divided into main-exhibiting artists and a subsection called Untapped, the Collection. Artists include Ellen Carpenter, Magali, A Cult, Ching-Wei Wang, Felisa Nguyen, Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman, Edd Ravn, Hongshan, and Agen Xin, working across performance, installation, painting, and mixed media.
