Art a path to conservation

Art a path to conservation

Dunedin-based artist Clare Reilly is celebrating her 50th year of exhibiting with a practice that merges vibrant depictions of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna with active environmental advocacy. Her work, which frequently features birds in flight as symbols of spiritual uplift, serves as both a tribute to the natural world and a warning about habitat loss. Through her career, she has collaborated with her late husband Max Podstolski under the Primitive Bird Group banner and participated in hands-on conservation efforts, such as the tūī relocation project to Banks Peninsula.

Is your local dairy in this exhibition?

Artist Harriet Millar is launching a site-specific exhibition featuring a series of paintings dedicated to Christchurch’s local dairies. In a creative turn, Millar has leased the abandoned Cranford St Dairy, which has been closed since 2021, to serve as both the gallery space and her future art studio. The collection includes oil and acrylic works depicting various neighborhood convenience stores, such as the Springfield Discounter and Clyde Road Dairy, captured with bold brushstrokes and geometric focus.

Six artists from the Artē Collective in Luggate, New Zealand, have opened their first group exhibition titled "Collective Circles" at their newly established gallery. The show features 20mm round artworks in painting, ceramics, and sculpture, created on-site as the artists take turns staffing the gallery. Works sold before the paint was dry, according to sculptor Andi Regan. The exhibition runs from December through January, with an opening event on December 5.
