A block of Great Jones Street in downtown Manhattan has been officially renamed Jean-Michel Basquiat Way, honoring the late Neo-Expressionist artist who lived and worked at 57 Great Jones Street from 1983 until his death in 1988. New York city council members and Basquiat's family, including his sister Lisane Basquiat, unveiled the street signs on October 21. The building now features a commemorative plaque and has been rented by actress Angelina Jolie as a showroom for her fashion brand Jolie Atelier.
This renaming cements Basquiat's legacy as a defining figure in New York's cultural history, transforming a site of personal tragedy into a lasting public tribute. It also highlights the ongoing institutional recognition of an artist who rose from the downtown graffiti scene to international fame, while underscoring the complex relationship between artistic genius, the art market, and systemic racism that marked his career.
