High Wire: Calder’s Circus at 100

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York is presenting "High Wire: Calder’s Circus at 100," a centennial exhibition celebrating Alexander Calder's seminal work, Calder's Circus (1926-31). The show brings together the miniature circus—complete with handmade figures, props, and lighting—along with Calder's circus-themed wire sculptures, drawings, archival materials, and early abstract works. Co-curated by Jennie Goldstein and Roxanne Smith, the exhibition runs from October 18, 2025, to March 9, 2026, and is supported by major donors including Kenneth C. Griffin and Griffin Catalyst.

This exhibition matters because Calder's Circus is widely regarded as the artist's most formative work, where he first explored the core ideas of balance and movement that would define his career, including his invention of the mobile. By marking the centennial of this iconic piece, the show highlights how Calder's playful, mechanical inventiveness with ordinary materials laid the groundwork for modern kinetic sculpture. The exhibition also underscores the enduring appeal of the circus as a subject in art, connecting Calder's early avant-garde performances in Paris to his lasting influence on contemporary audiences.
