Five can’t-miss fall art shows in Whatcom and Skagit counties

Whatcom and Skagit counties in Washington state are hosting several fall art exhibitions. The Whatcom Museum features a solo show by Lebanese-American artist Mary Ann Peters titled "myself inside your story" through January 25, alongside works from the Whatcom Artist Studio Tour and a photo exhibition on broadcasting pioneer Elaine Horn. Western Washington University's Western Gallery presents abstract painter Barbara Sternberger's "At the Core," curated by former Portland Art Museum executive director Bruce Guenther, with related dance and jazz events. Cordata Gallery opens "Pure Joy," a solo show of works by French-born painter Joy Olney, running through December 13. Voxel Gallery celebrates its first anniversary with a community party and a "World Famous" exhibition.

These shows matter because they highlight the vibrant regional art scene in the Pacific Northwest, offering accessible cultural programming that ranges from contemporary installations and abstract painting to historical photography and community celebrations. The exhibitions demonstrate how local museums and galleries support both established and emerging artists, while fostering community engagement through free access, artist talks, and interdisciplinary events that connect visual art with dance and music.
