Zoo, science centre and art gallery open for students during teachers’ strike

During Alberta’s province-wide teachers’ strike, three Calgary institutions—the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, TELUS Spark science centre, and Contemporary Calgary—are offering special programming for students. TELUS Spark is providing limited first-come, first-served camps for grades 1-6, with registration opening weekly. Contemporary Calgary is hosting art field trips for students aged 5-13, including color theory and painting workshops, from October 8-10. The zoo is highlighting recent animal births but has no strike-specific programming.

This matters because it illustrates how cultural and educational institutions can step in to support families during labor disruptions, providing alternative learning environments when schools are closed. It also highlights the role of art galleries and science centres in offering hands-on, non-curriculum-based STEAM and creative experiences, potentially expanding their community engagement and demonstrating their value beyond traditional school trips.
