lita albuquerque the sea is within me buffalo bayou park cistern houston 1234753485

Artist Lita Albuquerque staged a 25-minute performance titled "The Sea Is Within Me" inside Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, a 1926 underground reservoir, during the inaugural edition of Untitled Art, Houston. The piece featured Albuquerque's daughter and dancer Jasmine Albuquerque, vocalist Carmina Escobar, and double bassist Laura Dykes, guiding small groups through a meditation and a dramatic call-and-response between dancer and vocalist, exploring themes of joy, despair, and interdependence.

The performance stood out as the buzziest artwork of the fair, drawing raves from attendees and art press. It demonstrates how site-specific, experiential works can transcend traditional art-fair booths, engaging audiences in immersive, emotional narratives. The piece also continues Albuquerque's long-standing exploration of the heroine Najma, a twenty-fifth-century astronaut, linking cosmic and earthly planes through live art.
