The House of Pikachu: Art, Anime, and Pop Culture

Asia Society Texas (AST) in Houston announces its upcoming exhibition "The House of Pikachu: Art, Anime, and Pop Culture," opening October 17, 2025, and running through March 15, 2026. The show features 25 artists from Japan, Brazil, China, Mexico, Côte d'Ivoire, Texas, and beyond, exploring the influence of Japanese animation on contemporary art. Highlights include works by Yoshitaka Amano, Gao Hang, and Monsieur Zohore, with nods to classics like Astro Boy, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and an immersive homage to Pikachu.

The exhibition matters because it marks a significant institutional recognition of anime's global impact on contemporary art, nearly 20 years after the first major exhibitions on the topic. By showcasing how artists harness anime aesthetics—flatness, saturated colors, stylized features—to propel pop art into the 21st century, the show bridges high art and popular culture, appealing to a broad audience while validating anime as a serious artistic influence. It also highlights the role of nostalgia and shared cultural language in connecting diverse communities.
