Independent, the New York art fair, will relocate to Pier 36 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side for its May 2026 edition. The 70,000-square-foot venue more than doubles the size of its previous home at Spring Studios, accommodating increased gallery participation post-pandemic. The fair hosted 83 exhibitors in 2025, and founder Elizabeth Dee noted that even the coat check was repurposed for a special project. The architectural redesign will be led by Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu (SO–IL), with exhibition design by Berlin’s D_P_S.
The move is strategic, placing Independent within walking distance of Lower East Side galleries and closer to TEFAF, which takes place during the same week. Independent reported a 25 percent rise in foot traffic in 2025 when the fairs coincided. The relocation reflects a broader recalibration in the art fair landscape, aiming to boost attendance and institutional relevance. Dee emphasized that the change is one of scale, not direction, with the fair continuing to focus on solo shows, rising artists, and modern material that sheds light on the canon or the market.
