Pace Gallery in London is presenting 'My Country,' the first solo exhibition of works by renowned Australian artist Emily Kam Kngwarray in the UK, in collaboration with D’Lan Contemporary. Running from June 6 to August 8, the show traces Kngwarray's artistic evolution from early organic forms to vibrant dot-filled color fields and minimalist compositions, coinciding with a major survey at Tate Modern opening in July. The exhibition includes historical and contemporary batiks by artists inspired by her pioneering practice, alongside key paintings such as 'Harmony of Spring' (1990) and 'Desert Storm' (1992).
This exhibition matters because it brings overdue recognition to one of Australia's most critically acclaimed contemporary artists in the UK, highlighting Kngwarray's profound influence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, women artists, and the broader Australian art landscape. By presenting works that embody the ancestral and ecological relationships of her Anmatyerr heritage and the concept of Country, the show underscores the importance of Indigenous perspectives in contemporary art and offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage with Kngwarray's rapid stylistic evolution and deeply personal visual language.
