Hong Kong-based gallery Kiang Malingue is opening a new outpost on the Lower East Side of New York on May 9, joining a wave of Asian galleries expanding into the city. The 3,500 sq. ft space at 50 Eldridge Street, formerly an artist's studio, will debut with a solo show by Japanese artist Hiroka Yamashita titled 'The Lights from the Deep Mountains.' Other recent arrivals include Manila's Silverlens (Chelsea, 2022), Taipei's Nunu Fine Art (Lower East Side, 2023), Hong Kong's Alisan Fine Arts (Upper East Side, 2023), and Shanghai's Bank (Lower East Side, March 2025).
This westward expansion marks a significant shift from the previous trend of Western galleries opening in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong and Seoul. The move reflects growing US institutional interest in Asian and diasporic artists, as seen with exhibitions at Bard College's Hessel Museum and SFMOMA. By establishing a physical presence in New York, these galleries aim to provide their artists with better representation and exposure, bridging cultural conversations between East and West while challenging the traditional Western-centric art world perspective.
