The Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA) and the Hall of Art (Műcsarnok) have opened an outdoor panel exhibition in front of the Műcsarnok building on Bajza Street to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the institution's opening. Designed by Albert Schickedanz, the building was completed in 1896 for the Millennium alongside Heroes' Square and the Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition, which will be on view until November 22, looks back on the Műcsarnok's 130-year history, and a fall anniversary exhibition is also planned.
This anniversary matters because the Műcsarnok has been part of the Hungarian Academy of Arts' institutional family since 2014, operating under a new concept that includes national salons held every five years by genre—summarizing the latest achievements in contemporary architecture, photography, fine arts, applied arts, and folk art. The Frissen series of exhibitions, described as canon-shaping events, presents a single artist's entire body of work in one room, bringing the studio scale closer to the audience. The commemorations highlight the institution's enduring role in shaping Hungarian contemporary art and its commitment to showcasing both historical legacy and fresh artistic visions.
