The island was purchased in 2018 by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Agostino Re Rebaudengo from Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and transformed into a center for cultural production and ecological experimentation, with free admission and universal accessibility.
This expansion matters because it establishes a major new cultural hub in Venice, integrating contemporary art with environmental sustainability and circular economy principles. The foundation's network now spans Turin, Guarene, Madrid, and Venice, strengthening Italy's contemporary art infrastructure. The project aligns with ICOM's 2022 museum definition promoting sustainability and diversity, and positions the foundation as a model for biomuseology and historic site rehabilitation, while fostering international dialogue through its relationship with the Venice Biennale.
