Holding blue

Regen Projects in Los Angeles is presenting 'Holding blue', an exhibition of new photographs and sculptures by Catherine Opie. The show marks her twelfth with the gallery and features works inspired by the Norwegian landscape, including photographs of mountains bathed in Arctic blue light and ceramic sculptures titled 'Before' and 'After'. Opie traveled through Norway in early 2024 to capture the 'blue hour', and the exhibition coincides with several major solo shows at institutions such as the Fridericianum in Kassel, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

The exhibition matters because it deepens Opie's decades-long exploration of photography, landscape, and environmental concern, while also showcasing her recent turn to ceramics. By linking the sublime beauty of Norway's mountains to elegiac reflections on climate change, Opie connects personal memory and art historical traditions—from Renaissance painting to Yves Klein—to urgent contemporary issues. The show also underscores Regen Projects' enduring role in supporting major American photographers over more than three decades.
