Mattress Factory | Member Preview: Greer Lankton, "Could It Be Love"

The Mattress Factory museum in Pittsburgh is hosting a member preview of "Greer Lankton: Could It Be Love," an exhibition curated by Francis Schichtel and Jordan Weitzman. The show features 24 rarely seen photographs taken by the late East Village artist Greer Lankton (1958–1996), known for her lifelike dolls and explorations of gender, beauty, and the body. Presented in partnership with Magic Hour Press, the exhibition follows the release of the first major monograph on Lankton's photographic work, edited by Nan Goldin, Schichtel, and Weitzman. The preview takes place on November 13, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

This exhibition matters because it highlights Lankton as a trailblazing trans artist and a distinctive image-maker whose work captured the gritty, glamorous downtown New York scene of the 1980s. By showcasing her photographic practice alongside her better-known doll sculptures, the show and monograph help cement Lankton's legacy within art history, connecting her to transfeminism, avant-garde performance, and pop art. The partnership with Magic Hour Press and support from the Teiger Foundation underscore institutional efforts to preserve and elevate underrepresented queer and trans artists.
