The Alliance Française de Mitchell’s Plain in South Africa is launching its inaugural exhibition on May 30 at 18 Wall Street, Portland, dedicated entirely to local artists from the Cape Flats. The show features works by Elton Arendse (Eltie Arts), known for bold Abstract Expressionist acrylics, and Noeraan Jordan Bardien, whose multidisciplinary art captures beauty in everyday moments. A second gallery space inside the Alliance’s training room will also be unveiled, expanding the institution’s cultural footprint.
This exhibition matters because it marks a historic shift for a French cultural institution in a historically marginalized South African community, providing long-overdue visibility and a permanent platform for local creative talent. By centering artists from Mitchell’s Plain, the Alliance challenges the lack of dedicated exhibition spaces in the area and signals a broader commitment to community-rooted cultural development, youth empowerment, and international recognition—underscored by a recent visit from the French ambassador.
