HKMoA Receives Historic Donation of 2,000 Qing Dynasty Artefacts for New Cantonese Art Gallery

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) has received a historic donation of over 2,000 Cantonese and export artefacts from the Qing dynasty, gifted by Dr. Simon Kwan, a veteran art collector, founder of the Muwen Tang collection, and distinguished architect. This is the largest single donation in the museum's history, spanning ten categories including export paintings, painted enamels, silverware, fans, ivory carvings, textiles, lacquerware, and timepieces. To mark the occasion, HKMoA has inaugurated the Muwen Tang Gallery of Cantonese and Export Art and launched the exhibition "Proudly from Canton: The Muwen Tang Collection of Cantonese and Export Art," featuring over 120 representative sets of iconic Cantonese art that trace the golden age of Guangdong's artistic achievements.

This donation matters because it significantly strengthens HKMoA's global leadership in the collection and study of export art, a field that blends Chinese and Western craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities. The gift transforms a private collection into a public heritage asset, reflecting the dedication of Hong Kong collectors to preserving and promoting Chinese culture. The exhibition and new gallery ensure these treasures are accessible to the public and scholars, highlighting the historical importance of Guangdong as a center of artistic production and trade during the Qing dynasty.
