Angel Hui and Kingsley Ng on Representing Hong Kong at the 61st Venice Biennale

Angel Hui and Kingsley Ng are representing Hong Kong at the 61st Venice Biennale, which runs from 9 May through 22 November 2026. Hui plans to present a site-specific work using everyday Hong Kong objects, traditional craft, and light and shadow, inspired by overlooked ordinary beauty. Ng will show three works: two kinetic installations referencing urban features of Hong Kong and Venice, and an immersive projection simulating moonlight with a soundtrack of nighttime Hong Kong sounds, honoring the city's night workers. The pavilion is located in the Arsenale.

The artists' responses align with the Biennale's theme, "In Minor Keys," curated by the late Koyo Kouoh, which emphasizes listening over speaking. Hui notes her work's soft, slow rhythms fit the theme, while Ng highlights creating spaces for listening and the unsung. The Biennale remains important as a platform for cross-cultural exchange, allowing local stories to enter global conversations. This edition's focus on intangible, receptive art underscores the value of art that deals with the invisible and hidden, as referenced by John Berger.
