Care leavers form connections as art show tours UK

A nationwide art project called Going Places, organized by the Art Fund with £5.3 million in funding, is bringing together care leavers from Cornwall, Scotland, and Worcester through a touring exhibition titled "Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art." Participating galleries—Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance, Kirkcaldy Galleries in Scotland, and Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum—are exchanging artworks while offering creative workshops to young people with care experience. The Carefree Cornwall group created a banner for the exhibition with artist Kate Turner, and participants traveled to Scotland to collaborate with peers there.

The project matters because it uses art as a vehicle for social connection and cultural exchange among vulnerable young people who have experienced the care system, helping them build confidence and form supportive relationships across regions. It also addresses the underrepresentation of women artists in smaller museum collections by pooling resources to create a more comprehensive narrative. The initiative demonstrates how touring exhibitions can serve dual purposes: broadening public access to nationally important art while fostering community engagement and personal growth for marginalized groups.
