‘We Just Still’ brings the hood to Urban Arts Space

Curators Iyana Hill and Jonathan Johnson have organized "We Just Still" at Urban Arts Space in Columbus, featuring longtime airbrush artist Raymonn "Sugar Ray" Daniels in his first-ever gallery exhibition. The show includes Daniels' airbrushed paintings of Black cultural figures, a large-scale self-portrait, and works by other artists such as Ronald Baker and Raja Green, alongside an installation recreating a basement living space to evoke memories of home and community.

The exhibition matters because it deliberately bridges the gap between hood culture and the gallery world, challenging Euro-centric notions of fine art by celebrating artists who create outside traditional spaces. By featuring accessible materials, familiar imagery, and community-centered themes, "We Just Still" aims to make the gallery feel welcoming to audiences who may have previously found such spaces foreign, while highlighting the innovation that arises from limited resources.
