Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze's mosaic "May Your Road Be Light and Fun" has been installed at Brooklyn's Borough Hall subway station, covering a 110-foot corridor connecting the 2, 3, 4, and 5 lines. The work, created in collaboration with Miotto Mosaic Art Studios, excerpts motifs from about 50 of Amanze's drawings dating back to 2012, including swimming, aliens, birds, bikes, architecture, leopard-headed humans, and paper itself. It is the artist's first public exhibition.
The installation matters because it brings whimsy and color to a high-traffic transit space, transforming a mundane commute into an engaging visual experience. It also represents a successful translation of Amanze's paper-based practice into durable mosaic form, expanding the possibilities for public art in New York City's subway system. The work reflects themes of movement and journeying that resonate with daily commuters.
