"Between the Objects: an exhibition of an ironic artist opens in Odesa

Andrii Sahaidakovskyi's first solo exhibition in Odesa, titled "Between the Objects," opened on May 29 at the Odesa National Art Museum. Curated by Pavlo Hudymov, the exhibition features packaged objects that create a pause between items, alongside paintings on old rugs that contrast humble materials with the palace's luxurious hall. Sahaidakovskyi, known for his ironic take on everyday topics and his work in the New Wave movement, presents a new project specifically for this venue.

The exhibition matters because it highlights the resilience of Odesa's cultural scene amid the ongoing war. It is part of a broader trend of art events in the city, including the "Windows of the Old City" exhibition at the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art, which incorporates window frames damaged by Russian shelling, and Volodymyr Umanenko's "Freedom is not Death" project, which uses posters to address Russian aggression. These shows demonstrate how local artists continue to create and exhibit politically and socially engaged work despite conflict.
