Freya Tewelde: GEOMETRY OF ELSEWHERE

Gallery 1957 London presents 'Geometry of Elsewhere', a solo exhibition of new abstract paintings by London-based artist Freya Tewelde, opening on 5 June 2026 as part of London Gallery Weekend. The show marks Tewelde's first solo presentation with the gallery since announcing her representation in February, featuring works that shift from figuration to abstraction using powder pigment, oil stick, and acrylic to explore themes of diaspora, identity, and cultural in-betweenness.

The exhibition matters because it highlights Gallery 1957's continued role as a platform for African and diasporic artists in the UK, and Tewelde's evolving practice signals a significant turn toward abstraction in contemporary painting. The show also coincides with London Gallery Weekend and the gallery's tenth-anniversary Accra Cultural Week, underscoring the growing international visibility of artists from the African diaspora.
