Plein Air Painting week 🖼️

The 2026 Boulder County Plein Air Festival, organized by Open Studios, kicks off with 50 Colorado artists painting outdoors across the county. Public paint-outs will take place at Chautauqua Park on June 2 and at the Boulder Farmers Market on June 3, where visitors can watch artists work and ask questions. The event, co-founded in 2017 by Boulder artist Lindsay Ternes and former Open Studios executive director Cindy Sepucha, celebrates plein air painting despite natural hazards like bugs and weather. This year marks a deliberate local focus, limiting participation to Colorado artists to highlight the region's high concentration of artists per capita.

The event matters because it strengthens local arts community engagement by making the creative process accessible to the public and showcasing Boulder County's vibrant artist population. By shifting from a national call to a regional focus, Open Studios emphasizes place-based cultural identity and supports local talent. The festival also illustrates how plein air painting uniquely connects artists with nature, turning environmental challenges into creative opportunities, and reinforces the value of free, participatory art experiences in public spaces.
