JR has transformed the Pont-Neuf, Paris's oldest bridge, into a monumental trompe-l'œil installation titled "La Caverne du Pont-Neuf," featuring optical illusions, inflatable structures, and plays of light that create an open-air immersive cave. Running from June 6 to 28, 2026, the project is accompanied by an exhibition at Perrotin gallery titled "Les Esquisses de la Caverne" (June 5–July 25, 2026), which displays the artist's preparatory drawings, collages, and studies. JR will also hold a book-signing session at Perrotin Marais on June 13, 2026.
The project matters because it exemplifies how contemporary public art can transform iconic urban landmarks into interactive, participatory experiences that blur the boundary between reality and illusion. By pairing a large-scale outdoor installation with an intimate gallery exhibition and a signing event, JR creates a multi-layered engagement that invites both casual passersby and dedicated art audiences to explore the creative process behind a spectacular public artwork.
