CAT Museum unveils 1st-ever abstract painting, glass sculpture exhibition

The Cafesjian Art Trust (CAT) Museum in Shoreview has launched "Abstraction and Ourselves," an exhibition marking the first time the institution has paired abstract painting with glass sculpture. Curated by Jill Ahlberg Yohe, the show was inspired by the discovery that renowned glass artists Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová were deeply rooted in Cubist traditions and abstract theory, leading to a broader exploration of international abstraction across different media.

This exhibition is significant for its attempt to bridge the gap between studio glass and the broader history of modern art. By placing glass sculptures in direct dialogue with abstract paintings, the museum challenges the often-siloed nature of craft and fine art, providing a more cohesive narrative of how international artists have utilized diverse materials to explore non-representational forms.
