Kauai Society of Art exhibit opens in celebration of World Ocean Day

The Kauai Society of Artists (KSA) opened its 'Washed Up' marine debris exhibit at Kukui Grove Center in Lihue on May 30, 2026, in celebration of World Ocean Day. The exhibit features works created from ocean trash, including a piece titled 'Jack' by artists Nazira DeMarchi and Carol Meckling, which greets visitors. KSA President Julijana Pinnock was present at the opening, and artist Tami Lobasso, inspired by a ceramic mural at Kilauea Lighthouse by artist Kat Ho, also contributed to the show.

This exhibit matters because it uses art to raise awareness about ocean pollution and marine debris, turning trash into a powerful visual statement for environmental conservation. By partnering with World Ocean Day, the Kauai Society of Artists engages the local community in a global conversation about protecting marine ecosystems, demonstrating how grassroots art initiatives can amplify urgent ecological messages.
