Student exhibit opens during First Friday Artwalk in Rockland, June 5

The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland will host the opening of the Arts@theIntersection Student Exhibition on Friday, June 5, from 5 to 7 p.m., as part of First Fridays at the Farnsworth. The exhibition features artwork from four classrooms across four Maine school districts, culminating a year-long creative collaboration between students, the museum, artists, educators, and community partners. The free community celebration includes student artwork in the Craig Gallery, artmaking and games in the Sculpture Garden, refreshments, and a short film about the program.

This exhibition matters because it highlights the Farnsworth Art Museum's deep investment in youth education, with nearly 7,000 students participating in free programming in 2025 and over $3.5 million invested in educational initiatives since 2012. The Arts@theIntersection program positions young people as active collaborators in shaping museum experiences, not just visitors, reflecting a growing trend of museums prioritizing community engagement and student-led arts integration. The showcase demonstrates how art education can foster creativity, identity exploration, and community connection in rural school districts.
