JOOPITER has announced "Black Vanguard," the latest auction in its Contemporary Take series, focusing on artists from Africa and the African diaspora. Developed with Ghanaian art historian and former Sotheby’s specialist Elikem Logan, the sale spans painting, photography, and textiles, featuring artists working across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Highlights include works by Slawn, Otis Quaicoe, Soldier, Abdoulaye Konaté, Caroline Kent, Samuel Ross, Che Lovelace, Salah Elmur, and Nina Chanel Abney. The auction opens for browsing now, with global bidding from June 9 to 18, 2026.
The sale matters because it positions a new generation of Black contemporary artists at the center of the global art conversation, expanding beyond figuration into abstraction, textiles, and industrial forms. By giving these works the attention their market position demands, "Black Vanguard" argues for the art-historical weight of this moment and reflects the growing institutional and commercial recognition of African and diasporic artists, following earlier breakthroughs at Tate Modern, MoMA, and the Venice Biennale.
