Aleksandra Waliszewska puts pressure on Greek Antiquity with new show in the heart of Athens

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture in Athens is set to host 'Aleksandra Waliszewska: Irruption of Antiquity' from June to September 2026. Curated by Alison M. Gingeras, the exhibition features fifteen paintings by the Polish contemporary artist integrated directly into the museum’s permanent galleries. This transhistorical presentation places Waliszewska’s dark, atmospheric works in dialogue with artifacts ranging from the Neolithic and Classical periods to Byzantine and Modern Greek art.

Organized by the DESTE Foundation in collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the show utilizes Aby Warburg’s 'Mnemosyne Atlas' concept to trace how ancient myths and symbols persist in modern visual culture. Waliszewska, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, is celebrated for her Symbolist-inspired aesthetic that explores primal human emotions through apocalyptic scenes and hybrid creatures. The exhibition marks a significant moment for the artist in Greece, highlighting the enduring resonance of Mediterranean heritage in contemporary figurative art.
