What the Obama Presidential Center opening in Chicago looks like: public green space, community areas, and a museum full of site-specific art

Com’è l’Obama Presidential Center che apre a Chicago: verde pubblico, spazi di comunità e un museo pieno d’arte site-specific

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago will open to the public on June 19, 2025, a date chosen to coincide with Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Located in the South Side of Chicago, the $850 million center was developed in collaboration with the University of Chicago and designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners. It includes a museum, a library, and a campus within Jackson Park, featuring 30 site-specific art commissions by artists including Nick Cave, Julie Mehretu, Jenny Holzer, and Kiki Smith.

This center matters because it redefines the traditional presidential library model by emphasizing community engagement and contemporary art rather than solely celebrating a former president's tenure. The Obama Presidential Center aims to be a hub for civic participation and active citizenship, directly engaging with the historically African American South Side neighborhood. Its extensive site-specific art collection, curated through commissions, positions the center as a significant new cultural institution in Chicago that connects political legacy with contemporary visual art.
