The Michener Art Museum Was Once a Jail. A New Exhibit Brings That History to Life.

The Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, will unveil a new commissioned work by acclaimed ceramic artist Roberto Lugo on June 5. Titled *Permanence: We Were Here*, the four-foot-tall ceramic vessel explores the museum's history as the former Bucks County Jail, incorporating imagery from the original stone prison walls and drawings created by incarcerated individuals in the 1970s. The commission, funded by a state grant, is part of the museum's recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and will become part of its permanent collection.

The work matters because it reframes a landmark's past through contemporary art, asking viewers to consider whose stories are remembered and whose are left untold. By connecting the site's history as a correctional facility with Lugo's socially engaged practice, the museum expands its *Behind These Walls* initiative and highlights the role of contemporary craft in institutional storytelling. The piece also underscores how art can uncover hidden histories and foster community reflection on systems of oppression and resilience.
