How One Woman Is Working to Make Museums Free for All

Sonya Yu, a 39-year-old entrepreneur, art collector, and founder of creative agency Four One Nine, has donated $900,000 to MoMA PS1 in Queens, New York, to fund free admission for all visitors for three years starting in 2026. The donation makes MoMA PS1 the largest free museum in New York City, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. Yu, who immigrated from China as a child, was inspired by the museum's diverse local community and deepened her connection through director Connie Butler, whom she knew from the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. The initiative has already driven a 20 percent increase in attendance.

This move matters because it counters the global trend of rising museum ticket prices, making contemporary art accessible to a broader public, especially immigrants and lower-income residents. Yu's personal story—growing up without access to visual arts due to her family's struggles during China's Cultural Revolution and their subsequent immigration—underscores her mission to democratize art. The donation also highlights the growing role of young, West Coast philanthropists in supporting East Coast institutions, and it sets a precedent for other museums to consider free admission as a tool for community engagement and equity.
