A former Carnegie library in Stromsburg, Nebraska, has been transformed into Konst Art Gallery, which opened on May 1, 2025. The building, dedicated as a library in 1918, was purchased by retired art teacher Tim Alvis and his wife Jodie in 2024. The gallery now displays nearly 300 works by 25 Nebraska artists, including abstract paintings, pottery, sculptures, and glasswork. Alvis, who taught art for 37 years, uses the basement as his studio and plans to expand teaching there.
The conversion of a historic Carnegie library into an art gallery preserves an important local landmark while providing a dedicated exhibition space for Nebraska artists, many of whom are former students or colleagues of Alvis. The gallery's name, using the Swedish word for art, honors Stromsburg's Swedish heritage. This project addresses a gap in local arts infrastructure, offering emerging artists a venue to display their work and fostering community engagement with visual art in a rural setting.
