Samurai To The Imperial Court: Japanese Metalwork At Dallas Museum Of Art

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) has opened “Samurai to the Imperial Court: Japanese Metalwork,” an exhibition showcasing over 90 objects spanning five centuries of Japanese metallurgic artistry, from the late Muromachi period (1336–1573) through the Meiji period (1868–1912). The show features arms, armor, royal commissions, enameled vessels, and sculptures, drawn primarily from the DMA’s own collection supplemented by loans from private collections. It is organized into five thematic sections and runs through September 6.

The exhibition matters because it highlights the technical mastery and cultural significance of Japanese metalwork, an art form whose artists and innovations remain relatively unknown to American audiences. Curator Dr. Jacqueline Chao emphasizes that the show brings attention to these overlooked craftspeople and their contributions, offering a deeper understanding of Japan’s aesthetic and technological heritage. By presenting works from both the samurai and imperial court traditions, the exhibition bridges centuries of political and artistic transformation.
