This humble building in small-town Texas houses one of America’s greatest private art collections

In Marble Falls, Texas, a new gallery called Arthouse has opened, housing the extensive private art collection of Mickey and Jeanne Klein. The couple, who have collected contemporary art for nearly 50 years under the mentorship of legendary Houston patron Dominique de Menil, transformed an office relocation project into a public gallery. The 2,000-square-foot space, designed by Lake Flato architects, features works by blue-chip artists like Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell alongside emerging voices. The opening exhibition, 'Words Matter,' includes text-based works by Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer, and Faith Ringgold.

The project matters because it brings world-class contemporary art to a small Texas Hill Country town of about 10,000 people, providing access to a major private collection that would typically be found in a large metropolitan museum. The Kleins aim to open eyes and expose the local community to influential contemporary art, fulfilling a vision inspired by de Menil's belief that one learns about art by looking at it. The gallery demonstrates how private collectors can serve as cultural catalysts in underserved regions, bridging the gap between elite art worlds and rural communities.
